The Balance of Being is an Arts Council funded Touring exhibition, which brings together a body of work developed over several years, and new site-specific pieces made during short gallery-based residencies.
For this project David wanted to challenge himself and work in an alternative, intuitive process. He used the unique physical spaces of each gallery as backdrops to make work directly in the space.
Eight days prior to the exhibition openings David arrived with bags full of materials, a selection of 'in-progress' sculptures and set himself up to transform the galleries into 3-D 'Total Environments'. Each given space is held in a state of tension and flux.
David has taken many risks (revelaed and concealed) and seemingly mapped out the space so that each work has a sense of belonging.
Familiar themes are recurrent in David's work; an interest in human beings and human nature; how we as conscious beings interact with one another and our different levels of understanding, or lack of it.
